Abstract

The Promises of 5G Go Well Beyond High Data Rate, Spectral Efficiency, Ultra-Low Latency, Or Massive Sensor Networks.

The fundamental appeal of 5G lies in the fact that the entire infrastructure acts as a cohesive platform for innovative applications and is tuned to flex with demand - providing services tailored to their unique characteristics.

Whilst planning for the future spectrum requirements for 5G – that will unlock the super high demands expected of 5G – is an essential piece of the puzzle, so too, will the investment protection in the radio infrastructure be a key consideration for the pace of adoption. A flexible Radio Access Network (RAN) is a key cornerstone for the evolution to 5G.

By providing a software-defined, Cloud-RAN solution based on open interfaces, communications service providers can bring about much lower cost radio infrastructure, using an open software based model upon common hardware.

This speaker session will provide insight on:

  • The importance of creating a RAN architecture that can address the needs of 4G networks today while being ready for 5G evolution
  • 4G/5G co-existence and migration
  • Why it’s important to centralize before you virtualize and how centralized RAN architectures can provide cost reduction on all interfaces – not just front haul
  • Current network lag and how Cloud RAN allows rapid feature updates in one centralized location.
  • The need for a full network solution with all products on the same tested and virtualized platform, enabling NFV functionality
